Warren Slater died March 31, 1997, at his home in Tubac, Ariz. He is remembered by his wife Jane as epitomizing the eternal optimist for being "an 80 year-old man planting acorns." Mr. Slater was born in Hale, Mo., Aug. 18, 1910, to William Slater and Frances Fergerson and moved to his beloved Flint Hills in Kansas while still a young boy.
