H. Burnham was the first settler in Homestead township and he, with his father-in-law, A. Baker, settled in 1873. During the summer and autumn of that year, F. A. Speece and family, S. P. Coan, O. Beisyle, J. M. Hughes, F. M. Phillips, S. uhn [sic] and E. D. Campbell arrived and made locations. Some of these were frightened away by the grasshopper scare of 1874. The hoppers retarded the settlement of this part of the county and it was some time before the bad impression was changed to one of confidence. Since the early days this township has come to the front and is now one of the most important ones of the county and has a population of 699.
