A resident of Great Bend since 1975, coming from Hays, he was an oilfield roustabout and pumper, retiring from BHP Inc. He belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 1127 and American Legion Argonne Post No. 180, both in Great Bend, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428 in Hoisington. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Lyle Hicks; and three sisters, Maxine Hicks, Sarah Dodd and Edith Swalley. Burial with full military honors.
