The last words they had with their boys were not to touch the gun. The wish was not obeyed. Michael Schmitt, the younger, age 16, took the gun out and had it on the porch. As usual, he didn't know the gun was loaded. He pulled the trigger and the gun was discharged, the ball making a fatal wound in the body of his brother, Lewis David Schmitt, age 19, who was at the stable not 100 feet away. The wounded boy lived about 30 hours. His mother was nearly frantic with grief. The funeral services were held in the Congregational Church, Saturday the 15th, at Fairview, conducted by Rev Leon C. Schnacke of this city. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/brown/obits/s/schmitt2407gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 1.3 Kb
