When 12 years of age he came to Brown county, Kans., with his parents, where he remained with his parents on the farm until 1862. He responded to the country's call for troops, enlisting for nine months. Later he re-enlisted in the Seventh Kansas Volunteer Cavalry and served until the close of the war, when he returned to the farm in 1867. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Cassidy. A large family was born to them. His wife and 10 children survive his death which occurred Friday, April 17, at 1 a.m. The deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Hamlin. Rev. Mr. Vernon, pastor of the Padonia Methodist church, preached the funeral sermon at 2 o'clock Sunday. The I.O.O.F. lodge took charge of the funeral at the residence and marched to the church. Mrs. Dr. Taylor, Mrs. Allerton, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Magee, R. C. Berkley, W. Stapelton, J. J. Tucker and C. Jones were chosen from Hamlin to sing. The church was tastefully decorated with flowers. The old soldiers all attended to show their last respects to their comrade. The services at the grave were very impressive. The I.O.O.F. lodge sang two hymns and performed their rites. A. R. Smith, chaplain of the lodge, made the closing prayer. Burial was made in the Padonia cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by people from Hiawatha, Morrill and Hamlin. The pall bearers were Messrs. Gafford, Beamguard, Oldts, Slater, Lugenbeel and J. W. Adkins.
