She was left an orphan in early life and lived with her grandfather, Adam Cassidy, until her marriage to Michael Schmitt in 1867. To this union were born ten children, five sons and five daughters, two dying in infancy. The father's death was April 9, 1903. Mrs. Schmitt leaves to mourn her loss a host of friends and the following children: Adam, of near Padonia; Margaret, wife of Harvey Sherrer, of Whiting; Tom, of Ottawa; Mattie, of Padonia; Henry, of Hamlin; Elizabeth, wife of Judd Boyce, of Holton; Eva, wife of Homer Oldt, of Hamlin; lucile and James at home. Mrs. Schmitt was a member of the Methodist church for several years having been converted in her girlhood. She was a kind loving mother and a faithful companion in the home and to all those who knew her. During her illness of several months, she was a patient sufferer, never complained but was so thoughtful of those around her and especially of those caring for her. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. O. Hesse at the Padonia Methodist church, Tuesday, July 22. The remains were interred in the cemetery at Padonia.
