Mr. Smith was about 60 years old and both deaf and dumb. He was walking on the track on his way to the home of a nephew, who lives near Reserve, and had just got to the cut this side of the bridge when the extra train came along. The engineer whistled and tried to stop the train but could not, being only a short distance from Smith when he was noticed. The engine pilot struck his head and knocked him over against the iron casting on the pilot and from there he fell beside the track. The train was stopped and the train men went back to where he lay but life was extinct - his skull had been crushed. Only a short time ago he was struck by a train near the same place. The railroad employees are blemeless. Additional Comments: NOTE: William's name should read Schmitt rather than Smith. He was a brother of John Schmitt and Margaret Schorr.
