Augusta ks Butler co, Mary was born on Jan. 2, 1916 to Newt and Hattie (Jarred) McVay on a farm northwest of Alva, Okla. She spent most of her childhood in Augusta, graduated from Augusta High School in 1934. After receiving a teaching certificate from El Dorado Junior College, she taught in one room schools until 1942. On March 15, 1942, she married Oran Wakefield of Leon. He preceded her in death in 1973. After World War II, the family moved to Leon. She returned to college in 1958 and received her bachelor of science degree in education. She then returned to teaching first at Prospect School then in El Dorado schools. After her retirement in 1980, she and her teacher friends set out to visit many of the places around the country that they had taught their students about over the years. In 1983 she moved back to Augusta, where she spent the remainder of her life.In addition to her husband, Oran, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters
