Former El Doradoan Meryl burner Dies Unexpectedly 

Howard Meryl Burner, 42, of Lincoln, Neb., a former El Doradoan, died 
unexpectedly Thursday at Cap Haitien, Haiti, where he was on a mission in 
connection with his work as Baptist church education director of Lincoln. Death 
is thought to have resulted from cerebral hemorrhage.

Funeral plans are incomplete, pending arrival of the body from Haiti. All that 
is certain at this time is that interment will be made in an El Dorado cemetery.

Mr. Burner, the son of Mrs. Paul Burner, now of Lincoln, and the late Mr. 
Burner, spent his early youth here and attended El Dorado High School and 
Butler County Community Junior college.

Mrs. Burner is the former Peggy Truman, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. 
c. Truman of El Dorado. Also surviving are a son, Paul 12, and two daughters, 
Jean 15 and Susan 8, of the home, 5630 Randolph, Lincoln, Nebr. Mrs. Paul 
Burner also shares the home.

Mr. Burner with another youth director and a group of 11 youth of the Baptist 
church, left Lincoln August 13 to spend two weeks in visiting denominational 
mission work in Haiti. For the past six years he had directed church 
educational programs, working with university students in the church.

The family moved to Lincoln from El Dorado about six years ago. During his 
adult life here, Burner directed operations and marketing for the Skelly Oil 
Company for a period of seven years. He also operated a Skelly service station 
at Central and Vine.

He was widely known in this area and enjoyed the friendship of many persons. He 
was extremely active in affairs of the First Baptist church here.

Earlier, Mr. Burner taught junior high school science classes at Robinson 
intermediate school in Wichita. He also served as director of physical 
education programs at the Aberdeen S. Dak, YMCA for a time.

During his high school career here, and later at Wichita university, he won 
wide recognition in football and was an all conference guard at the University 
of Wichita.

The El Dorado Times 
August 24, 1965 

The untimely death of Howard Meryl Burner, 42, has brought deep sorrow to El 
Dorado and the area in which he spent his vibrant youth.

Mr. Burner died unexpectedly and from an unknown cause last Thursday in Haiti, 
where he had gone on a supervisory trip in connection with his duties as 
educational director of the Baptist Church. His home had been at Lincoln, 
Nebr., during the past six years.

As boy and man, Mr. Burner was dedicated to activities in the service of 
others. Of deeply religious bent, he translated his activities into a young 
man’s vigorous aid for church and related interests. His formal education was 
secured in the El Dorado schools and at Wichita Univerisity. But he found time 
devote his eager attention to many crusades for the welfare of those about him. 
He had gained an enviable rank as a young executive with the Skelly Oil company 
but abandoned it to work for his church and the betterment of mankind.

He will be long remembered in this town, with admiration for his character and 
the many generous services he performed. During World War II, as a member of 
the military service, he devoted much attention to the procurement of benefits 
that would aid his associates under the flag. Married to the former Peggy 
Truman, his domestic life was one of idyllic nature.

Death caught Meryl Burner on foreign soil, but his body will be returned for 
interment in the bluestem land which he loved – and which he helped to make 
more beautiful by the sterling attributes of his selfless and unselfish life.
