HEART ATTACK FATAL TO CAROL BYRD, WICHITA, FORMER EL DORADO RESIDENT 

Carol M. Byrd, 57 a former resident of El Dorado and president of the firm 
operating the Byrd-Snodgrass Funeral Home in Wichita, died of a heart attack 
during Wednesday night at his home, 329 St. James street.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock the afternoon of Saturday, September 
7 at the Byrd Snodgrass chapel in Wichita. Burial will be made in the White 
Chapel Memorial Gardens at Wichita.

Mr. Byrd was an amiable, friendly man who had formed many fast friendships 
during his residence in this town and at Wichita. Slight of stature, he was a 
first-class business man who was successful in his own private affairs, and who 
devoted much of his time and energy to associations of a civic nature. In the 
course of an exceedingly busy and active life, he had rendered much service to 
the uplife of the communities in which he was located. He had suffered from an 
ailing heart condition for several years.

He was born in Lane, Kansas, on March 6, 1906, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. 
Claude Byrd. He came to El Dorado with his parents in 1906, and lived in this 
community until 1929 when he moved to Wichita. In 1930 he was instrumental in 
the formation of the Byrd-Snodgrass funeral home.

Byrd-Snodgrass, purchased the Byrd Funeral Home in El Dorado in 1952, and 
operated it along with a similar institution at Valley center. In 1958 the 
local funeral home was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dietz and Mr. and Mrs. Jack 
Pittman. It has since been conducted as the Dietz-Pittman funeral home.

Carol Byrd was a member of the First Methodist church at Wichita and also was 
affiliated with the Masonic orders. He was a loyal member of the Wichita Rotary 
club and also belonged to the Wichita chamber of commerce and the Wichita club.

He had served as patron of the Order of Eastern Star and also was a part 
president of the Preferred Funeral Directors International Association.

Surviving him in his personal family are his wife Mrs. Bobby jean Byrd, a 
daughter Mrs. Mike (Jane) Cochran, Wichita and a son Jack Byrd of Phoenix, Ariz.

His brother Gerald Byrd and a first cousin, Mrs. Adaline Farall reside in El 
Dorado.
