She was 17 years old on July 19th. She broke down in her school work in September 1901. Permanent health was denied her and in May last her mother took her to Colorado Springs where it was hoped that cool and bracing climate and the highest medical skill might restore her vigor. The anticipation was vain and after almost four months of struggle her hard-fought battle was lost. Today, August 26th her body was laid to rest in Belle Vista. She was beautiful as the dawn of a bright summer day and like a new blown rose, incomparable in its perfection of purity, beauty and fragrance. To a splendid mind was added a most loving disposition, a courageous heart and above all the grace of a keen and tender conscience. Truly "none knew her but to love her; none named her but to praise." She had not yet entered upon life's duties and responsibilities but she has not lived in vain. Her purity of thought and deed, loyalty and devotion to right, her tender and true love of those who entered into her brief life, serve as an example, a light, an inspiration to those who have known and loved her. This rude and busy world will soon forget Berenice but those qualities which brighten and better the world will be caught up and in emulation by those she loved and who loved her and her influence be thus widened forever and forever.
