Swisher, Butler Pioneer, Dies Portia E. Swisher, wife of J. H. Swisher, 523 North Denver Street, died this morning at 5 o'clock. Mrs. Swisher was 73 years old. She was one of the oldest settlers in Butler County. She and Mr. Swisher home-steading a piece of land east of El Dorado and living there for 48 years with the exception of a short time spent in Coffeyville. Mrs. Swisher was born on June 6, 1851 at Detroit, Mich. She was married to J. H. Swisher on Decmeber 24, 1874 at Brighton, Iowa and they moved to Kansas in 1876k. She is survived by her husband and six children, B. L. Swisher, El Dorado; A. R. Swisher, Piedmont; Mrs. Bert McCullough, Marion; Mrs. John Franklin, Council Grove; Mrs. Walter Lukins, Oil Hill; Mrs. Russell Jay, Kansas City, Mo.; sixteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. For the past 30 years Mrs. Swisher was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She and Mr. Swisher would have celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary next Christmas eve. Mrs. Swisher was a fine Christian type of womanhood and had a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Byrd Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. C. A. Kitch, of the Methodist Church, will be in charge of the services. Burial will be in West Cemetery.
