A son of Captain C. W. LOPP, living near the school house, heard a noise in the attic, and calling the attention of others to the fact, a crowd of seven who were on the trail went to the school house, and, after making an examination, demanded the surrender of whoever might be in the building. After repeated calls, coupled with threats of burning the building, an answer was obtained, and after some parleying an offer on the part of the searchers that they would see the men in hiding conducted in safety to the jail, the boys gave themselves up. The school house had no scuttle on the inside of the building and the boys had sawed a hole through the roof and arranged it as a blind trap almost indistinguishable from the ground and had conveyed a supply of provisions and ammunition into it. They had several guns and revolvers and were evidently prepared for a regular siege of some days. But for the noise made at an inopportune time the probabilities are they might have escaped. On the arrival of the officers having the two men in charge the town became wildly excited, and but for the labors of the mayor and some others the probabilities are that "Kansas justice" would have been meted out to them. The boys were before he officers with closed doors for some time, but it is not known whether any information further than already known has been obtained. The people have partly promised to let the law have its course, but it only needs some one to take the lead, and grave fears are entertained of trouble during the day. An unknown person, making himself too conspicuous, was arrested, and some fear that the friends of the boys are on hand to make a break. The first move made, however, will lead to serious trouble, as armed men constantly parade the streets. Alex FRY has been arrested in Missouri and George LACY at Ft. Scott, Kan. These boys were the associates of the BLALOCKS and are charged with being confederates. A dispatch also says that Clay BLALOCK has been arrested at Abilene as an accessory after the fact. ________________ Source: Kansas News page, The Winona CLIPPER, Winona, Logan County, Kansas; Thursday, March 22, 1888; Volume 1 No. 17, page 2 column 6.
