Sanford . . . Burl K. SANFORD, age 98, long-time educator, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 1991, in Maude Norton Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient three weeks, following a lengthy illness. He resided at 531 W. Central, Columbus. Born July 28, 1892, in Herrick, Ill., he lived there until moving to Baxter Springs in 1903. He grew to manhood in Baxter Springs graduating from the high school there. He attended Kansas Wesleyan Business College in 1912-1914 and received BS and MS degrees from Kansas State College of Pittsburg. He worked in banking in Oklahoma and Kansas several years. Mr. SANFORD married Mae RUMERY Aug. 27, 192, at Columbus. They moved to Columbus in 1941 and were teachers here. Mr. SANFORD served as high school business teacher for 30 years before retiring. Mrs. SANFORD preceded her husband in death March 5, 1986. Mr. SANFORD was a veteran of World War Two. (sic) He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Keith Reeves Post, No. 3, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Lions Club, serving as treasurer of the latter from 1957-1971. Surviving are two sons, Robert K. SANFORD, St. Louis and Jack G. SANFORD, Saratoga, Calif.; one daughter, Beverly L. WHITE, St. Louis; one niece, Arlene WEISS, Miami and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Murdock Funeral Home. The Rev. David MILLER will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. SANFORD was born July 28, 1892, at Herrick, Ill. He moved to Baxter Springs in 1903. He was a 1913 graduate of Baxter Springs High School. He attended Kansas Wesleyan Business College from 1913 to 1914. He graduated from Kansas Sate Teachers College, Pittsburg. He moved to Columbus in 1941. He worked in banking for a number of years in Oklahoma and Kansas, later teaching business at Columbus High School for 30 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 3 and the Masonic Lodge, all of Columbus. He was Lions Club treasurer from 1957 to 1971. He was a World War I veteran. SANFORD Final rites for Burl K. SANFORD, who died April 25, were held at 2 p.m. today in the Murdock Funeral Home. The Rev. David MILLER officiated. Music was provided by Dorothy NESTOR. Casket bearers were Ronald BOULWARE, Buddy BARKER, Dick COOPER, Dee HOLMES, Brad GLEASON, Don SCHOECH and Ted SIMKIN. Honorary casket bearers were Delbert STOVER, Dr. Stanley DAVIS and Harold BRANDENBURG. Burial was in Park Cemetery. Mr. SANFORD was a veteran of World War I, not World War II as was mistakenly reported in his obituary.
