Old age is a part of the scheme of life. She had fulfilled her mission and passed that stone that marked the highest point; being weary, she quietly went to sleep, passing on to that eternal sleep that knows no awakening. She knew the hardships of a pioneer mother with a large family, and in later years she has enjoyed the loving attention of her relatives and friends. Her life story follows: Catherine Rapp was born in Syracuse, Indiana on Feb. 14, 1849, and passed away March 6, 1939 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.R. Byrne in Manhattan, Kansas, aged 90 years and 20 days. On April 9, 1868 she was married to Christian Oppenlander in Indiana, and to this union eleven children were born, two having preceded their mother in death, and nine surviving her. In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Oppenlander moved to Kansas, homesteading in Fancy Creek, north of Green. Fifty eight years ago they moved to Clay Center, making this their home until the death of the husband in 1916. Since that time Mrs. Oppenlander has made her home with her children, spending most of her time between her daughter in Manhattan and her daughter, Mrs. Lester Reed in Clay Center. The surviving children are Eli of Ogden, John of Clyde, Henry and Will of Clay Center, Ernest of Junction City, Amanda Borden Smith of Denver, Mrs. Emma Walker of Colorado Springs, Mrs. Mary Reed of Clay Center and Mrs. Ida Byrne of Manhattan. One son, Norman, passed away Nov. 20, 1937 and one daughter, Mrs. Minne Warren, Jan. 3, 1935. She also leaves 46 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, and many other relatives and a host of friends. The body was brought to Clay Center for burial. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Dr. M. O. Clemmons of the First Baptist church. The songs were "Rock of Ages", "Jesus Lover Of My Soul", and "Someday He'll Make It Plain To Me". The singers were Mrs. Hazel Petermeyer and Mrs. Walter Obenland and the accompanist was Mrs. Otis D. Swenson. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. The body bearers were grandsons of Mrs. Oppenlander. The large assembly of relatives and long-time friends, and the profusion of beautiful flowers expressed admiration for the life of a good woman. Additional Comments: Catherine Oppenlander was my great-great grandmother.
