The trip took 17 weeks and they drifted to far north and got into ice. They about froze and got hungry and only ate one meal a day. They were 16 an 18 years old, Fred the older. They had an older sister that remained in Prussia. Fred corresponded with her but Louis didn’t. They got out of Germany before they had to register. They didn’t talk of their Father and Mother (John Bunge and Elizabeth Frost). They came to Kansas and Louis got a pre-empted 160 acre at $1.25 an acre, not a homestead. The land office was at Lecompton, Kansas, close to now Lawrence, Kansas. Fred didn’t like it in Kansas. They both went back to Indiana. Louis married Minnie Gillow, 7 March 1864 in Auburn, Indiana. Louis was born 2 Oct 1834 in Mecklenburg, Germany and died 9 Sep 1914. His wife Minnie was born 3 Mar 1838 in Prussia and died 21 Apr 1915. They had two sons, Frances Lewis (b 24 Feb 1865 Kekalb County, IN and died 20 mar 1928) and Albert Merrick (b 13 May 1867 Dekalb County, IN and died 20 Jul 1957 in San Juan, TX). The 1870 census of Pottawatomie, Coffey County, Kansas indicates that Lutwig Bunger with wife Minna and two sons: Francis and Albert lived next door to Christian Gelo (probably) his brother-in-law. The 1880 census contains the same people with better spelling of both families. Louis and family migrated to Kansas in March 1869. The 1900 census of Coffey County, KS indicates Louis came to USA in 1854 and Minnie came in 1862. Albert married Emma Schweizer 28 Oct 1890 in Coffey County, KS. Emma was born 30 Dec 1866 In Riegoldswil, Basel Land, Switzerland an died 5 Mar 1965. Albert and Emma had 4 children: Edna Minnie Bunge born 13 Dec 1891 and married Arthur Louis Shobe, Walter Harvey Bunge born 10 Jan 1894 and married Katherine Young, Lynn Albert Bunge born 13 Sep 1895 and married Elva Ross and Lucille Parnell, and Lillie Anna Bunge born 27 Jun 1898 and married to Elmer Bruner. Frances Lewis married Clara Lavica Baughman 8 Sep 1887 in Coffey County, KS. Clara was born 22 Sep 1863, Lowell Lake County, IN. Francis and Clara had five children, two died in infancy. Children were: Louis Elworth born about 1889 and married Maude Calvert, Earl Francis born 26 May 1890 and married Verna ?, and Ruth Mae born 9 Feb 1893. The author of this paper is unknown. I found this in papers of my father-in- law, Raymon Shobe who died at May 2011 at the age of 97. He was son of Arthur Shobe and and Edna Minnie Bunge (referenced in this document) , grandson of William Shobe and Sarha Wilmina LaRue. I have added some information to the original document.
