Edward states that he enlisted on the 30th day of March 1864 in Co A, McLauglins Squadron of Ohio Cav. Vols and was discharged from the same on the 20th of May 1865. "That while in the service in the line of duty at Spring Place in the state of Georgia on or about the 1st day of September 1864 claimant was wounded in the left foot while cleaning his gun , same gun went off , which his totally disabled claimant from performing manual labor ever since. Claimants occupation has been that of a farmer. That, since leaving the service of the United States Vol Army claimant has resided at Lima, Ohio until 1869 when claimant removed Burlington, Coffey County, State of Kansas where he has resided ever since." In supplemental papers, filed June 1924, the following information was provided. Edward described himself at time of enlistment as follows: Height 5 feet 9 ½ inches; complexion, Ruddy; color of eyes, Grey; color of hair, Light; that his occupation was Farmer; that he was born May 27, 1841, at Ross County, State of Iowa (wrong since born in OH). The examiner took testimony from various persons. However, of interest is a note in his report to the Commissioner of Pensions. "The only one who exhibited any bias was Jesse Werts, the Claimant's brother-in-law, who seemed very biased against him, and who, after his deposition was closed, intimated that the Claimants rheumatism existed before the war." Ed moved his family to Kansas in 1869 and homesteaded a farm two miles North of Gridley, KS where the family lived until 1897 when they moved to Burlington, KS.
