Watson near Eddyville in the cunty of Mahaska state of Iowa on the 11 th day of September 1869. That she remembers well how he was dressed for burial and that my mother (now the widow of James O. Gates) was so overcome with grief that she had to be lifted from the wagon. That she went to the burial and saw her father James P Watson buried at said time & place and although not seven years old at the time she remembers well the above facts. Coen Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, Levi Gates aged 53 years, a resident of Bedwell in the County of Wapello and State of Iowa well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he was acquainted with Lucinda Gates first wife of James O Gates. That she died on the 17 th day of August 1868 at or near Marysville in Monroe County State of Iowa, that at the time of the death of Lucinda Gates the Residence of James O Gates and Lucinda Gate was in Moneroe Co Iowa their Post office of said Gates was Marysville Monroe Co Iowa that I am a brother of James O Gates deceased. Kansas County of Comanche, ss: In the matter of pension claim of Josephine Gates #453047 ON THIS 6 day of January A.D. 1893; personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, Mary Klingensmith aged 33 years, a resident of Avilla Township in the County of Comanche and State of Kansas well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That Iknow of my own personal Knowledge of the death of Lucinda Gates the wife of Jams O Gates and that she died at Eldorado Iowa and was buried on the 18" day of 1868 and that I know this to be true because I was present at the time of her death. Gates Co F, 4 th Reg't Iowa Cav. Volunteers. Widow's Pension N. 453,047. WE, James W. Champion and Moses W. Hall of the town of Pittsburg County of Crawford and the State of Kansas do solemnly swear that we are neighbors of Josephine Gates who is the widow of James O Gates, deceased, on whose account she applies for Pension under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890, and that for the past two years we have been well acquainted with the said Josephine Gates; that from our frequent intercourse and conversations, and from other circumstances, we have every reason to believe, and we do believe, that the said Josephine Gates has not re-married since the death of the above-mentioned James O Gates. Lewis, who, being duly sworn according to las, declares that he resides in Hepler County of Crawford State of Kansas; and that he is a practicing Physician of Said County of said County of Crawford located in Hepler in the last-named County and That he was present at the home of Jas Gates Late of Co. F of 4 th Iowa Cavalry on the 28 th day of November 1882 and then and there delivered a male child That said child was alive and so far as I know is yet alive Affiant further declares that he has no interest in the prosecution of any claim in behalf of Josephine Gates for Pension. /s/ O.F. Gates ON THIS 29 day of June A.D. 1892; personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, Louisa Watson aged 25 years, a resident of Pittsburg in the County of Crawford and State of Kansas whose Post Office address is Pittsburg Kansas Emma Poolard aged 23 years, a resident of Pittsburg in the County of Crawford and the State of Kansas well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That she is well acquainted with the financial condition of claimant and knows that claimant has no income or means of support except such as her own labor or the labor of her children That her property consists of four cows and a team and she rents land for crops which is cultivated by her and her daughter who go into the fields and work like men to tend the crops That she has no notes bonds mortgages or other property that would bring her an income That she does not own any land or other propery except as above stated and a few farm implements. Gates during his last sickness as such physician That the said James O.
