Col. Matthew A. Cross Planned to Make his Home in Lawrence. Col. Matthew A. CROSS, 63 years old, died in a hospital at Brigham, Utah, yesterday after a short illness following a heart attack, according to word received here. Colonel Cross purchased the residence at 546 Louisnana street here last spring as a place to spend his retirement from the army which was to take place September 5 following 43 years of service. He moved into the home June 1 after living at the Eldridge Hotel since late in April. His wife died in 1934 and Colonel Cross planned to live here alone until a daughter employed in the navy department in Washington came here after the war. Colonel Cross picked Lawrence to live in after retirement because he had remembered the place fondly since he had been a K.U. student in 1887 and again in 1899. He received his appointment to West Point in 1900 and his army career took him to many parts of the world. Prior to coming here he had been for four years commandant of the R.O.T.C. at Utah State Agricultural college at Fort Logan, Ut. He left Lawrence about two weeks ago to visit in Utah. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ada CROSS and a sister, Mrs. Edith Cross HILL, both of Oakley, Kan., and a brother, Dr. Roy Cross of Kansas City, Mo. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/douglas/obits/c/cross919gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 2.0 Kb
