Pontius Dies. Had Been Resident of Douglas County Since 1877. Arthur C. PONTIUS, 79, longtime resident of Douglas county, died at his home, 717 South Park street, yesterday afternoon after an illness of several months. He came to this community with his family when he was 14 years old and settled on a farm in the Kanwaka neighborhood where he spent the major part of his life. Because of impaired health, Pontius retired from farm work in 1920 and since then had made his home in Lawrence. Older residents of the farming district west of Lawrence remember his many activities in the early days, and of his particular interest in the building and organization of the Kanawaka Congregational church which he served as trustee. Born in Circleville, O., on July 4, 1863, Pontius would have had his eightieth birthday next Sunday. He was married in 1887 to Mabel RICHARDSON, who lived on a nearby farm, and they were the parents of nine children. Mrs. Pontius survives him. All of the eight living children will be here for funeral services Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Rumsey funeral home. They are Mrs. Virgil HIRD, of Baldwin; Clayton Pontius, Eskridge; Mrs. Julius LOFQUIST, Albert City, Ia.; Carroll H. Pontius, Topeka; Major Herman W. Pontius, U. S. Army; Harold A. Pontius, Laawrence; Mrs. Arthur A. SILVERTHORNE, Portland, Ore.; and Ernest A. Pontius of Lawrence, advertising manager of the Journal-World. Other survivors are 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The Rev. Paul B. LAWSON will conduct funeral services and burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/douglas/obits/p/pontius353gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
