Was Member of Bar and Woman's Suffrage Pioneer. Mrs. Lizzie Shoemaker SHELDON, oldest member of the Douglas County Bar association and woman's sufferage pioneer, died late yesterday afternoon at her home, 401 Louisiana street. She was 91. Born in Springfield, Ill., on March 15, 1851, Lizzie Shoemaker early came in touch with politics and the legal profession. Her father, Thomas C. Shoemaker, studied law in the office of Abraham Lincoln and later was appointed by President Lincoln as Receiver of Public Monies for the Kansas Territory. The family first lived in Leavenworth and later in Topeka where Lizzie Shoemaker was valedictorian of the graduating class of old Bethany college. In 1871 she was married to Joseph L. SHELDON, a veteran of the civil war, and five children were born. When the husband became ill, the family moved to Lawrence and Mrs. Sheldon entered the K.U. school of law, graduating in 1900. In the years that followed, Mrs. Sheldon had an active part in state government, particularly in the crusade for woman's sufferage. The law finally adopted was largely her own writing. In 1914 she received 156,000 votes for nomination as justice of the supreme court, but was short of a plurality. Mr. Sheldon died in 1917. He too became greatly interested in the legal profession. After working as a musician for many years he decided to obtain legal training and entered a law school in Denver form which he graduated with honors when he was 63 years old. Mrs. Sheldon is survived by four children; Mrs. Junia Sheldon PIERCE of Lawrence; Carl J. SHELDON, Jet, Okla.; Rev. Roderick D. Sheldon, Mooreland, Okla.; and Ruth Elizabeth Sheldon, The Dalles, Ore. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m. at the Rumsey funeral home with Rev. Howard Koelb officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
