Clara Viola STEEPER was born of a Quaker family on September 28, 1860, in Hamilton county, Indiana, the oldest of twelve children, of John F. and Mahala WILLITS. At 2 1/2 years of age, she came with the family in a covered wagon to a claim in Jefferson county, Kan., 4 1/2 miles norht of McLouth, resided there until married to George William STEEPER. Removed to a prairie claim in Norton county, Kan., living there until a prairie fire burned most of the outbuildings, then returning to Jefferson county, Kan., rsiding there and in McLouth until 1905, when the family moved to Lawrence for further education of her children, where she has since lived. Her husband died on December 9, 1928. Two daughters and three sons wer born to this union, the twin daughters having died in infancy. The three sons were graduated form the University of Kansas. H.T. Steeper, the oldest, lives at Mission, Kan., and is an instructor in the Junior College of Kansas City, Mo. Bert Steeper is a lawyer in Kansas City, Mo., and lives there. T.P. Steeper, the youngest, resides in Bartlesville, Okla., where he is an officer in the Cities Service companies. Seven grandchildren also survive her and three sisters, Mrs. Will PYLE of McLouth, Mrs. James SPARKS, of Lawrence, and Addie WILLITS, of Topeka. She was of pioneer stock, with high ideals, rugged integrity and of sterling character. Her chief interests in life were her family, its welfare and progress. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock, June 21, at the Rumsey funeral home in Lawrence. Rev. Harry W. Sims officiated. Music was furnished by a quartet: Mrs. Harold STEEPER, Miss June STEEPER, E.C. STEEPER and Charles H. STEEPER. Three sons and three nephews were pallbearers.
