Nichols It was a shock to the community Monday afternoon when word came that Henry M. Nichols had died at the home of his daughter at LaPlata, Missouri, where he and Mrs. Nichols had gone for a visit some four or five weeks ago. About ten days ago Mr. Nichols had been attacked by pneumonia and in spite of the best of care and medical attention he was not able to resist the ravages of the disease. The body was brought to Moline for the funeral Wednesday morning being met by the hearse from the Tilton undertaker establishment and taken to the Nichols home in the east part of town. At half past one, funeral services were held at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. M. G. McIntosh and interment was made at the Elk Falls cemetery. The following is the obituary furnished for publication: Henry M. Nichols was born in Clark County, Illinois, February 16, 1843, and departed this life the 6th day of November 1922, at LaPlata, Missouri, aged 79 years, 8 months and 20 days. At the age of 18 in response to his country's call he enlisted in the Illinois Volunteer Infantry, regiment 123, Company F. He was in the service three years, and during this time he was held prisoner at Richmond, Virginia, for eight months. While in prison he made a saw out of a case knife and in moving from Danville to Andersonville where so many prisoners died, he with several others sawed their way out of a box car and escaped to his regiment. In 1865 he returned home and stayed with a widowed mother until 1869. He then spent about a year and a half in Minnesota then coming to Elk Falls in the fall of 1870. On March 14th, 1880, he was united in marriage to Lillian Ida Sherwin of Elk Falls. To this union were born three children, one of whom, Alonso, preceded his father to the great beyond about eleven years ago. He united with the Methodist church in Moline. He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Elk Falls and belonged to the Rebekah Lodge in Moline. He also held membership in the G. A. R. Post here. Mr. Nichols was a highly respected citizen and held the confidence of all who know him as an upright man. He served Elk county as Probate Judge. He was a noble character and found strength and comfort in the one living and true God. Those left to mourn his departure are, his wife, one son, Chester, of Moline, a daughter, Mrs. Walter B. Thompson of LaPlata, Missouri; one foster daughter, Mrs. Fred Carlton of Morgan Hill, California; two brothers, John Nichols of Eufaula, Oklahoma, and Dan Nichols of Martin, Idaho and eleven grandchildren.
