Kirkland (Bill Berry) was shot and instantly killed by John Troth the city marshal last Friday evening May 5th at the home of John Goetz in the west part of town. The Marshal in company with C. C. Rupp his deputy went to the house to arrest its inmates. It is told that Berry assumed a threatening attitude and resisted the arrest. In the scuffle the marshal fired four shots killing him instantly. A corroners (NOTE: this is the way the paper spelled coroner) inquest held Saturday morning found that Troth was justified in shooting. Additional Comments: This article was on the front page. It seems that William Kirkland's nick names were Bill and Berry.
