He grew up in Marysville and Kearney, Neb., and graduated from Kearney High School in 1942. He lived in Louisville, Ky., Kansas City, Denver and Hays. He graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1945. In 1950, he began practicing general medicine in Hays and taught nurses training classes at Fort Hays State University. He returned to training in 1973 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to specialize in anesthesia, practicing it exclusively until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Hays, and was a past member of Rotary International. He was a U.S. Army veteran, commissioned in the Army Medical Corps as a lieutenant, junior grade. He served in the U.S. Navy as an examining physician. He also served on the hospital ship Haven in Icon harbor in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a brother, Allan Artman; and a sister, Mary Lou Thomas.
