She attended country schools in Webster County Iowa, graduated from Thor High School. She married Harold Gjerstad on September 6, 1939. They began farming near Thor, moving to Livermore in 1941 where they farmed and raised 4 children. In 1979 they retired to Dodge City to be near their son living on his farm and enjoying a prosperous retirement. Leona worked hard as a farmer hauling her own water, milking cows, raising chickens and tending large gardens. She was one of the original cooks to open the Humboldt Hospital kitchen. In retirement she learned to cane chairs, restore trunks and rosemal. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her children. Leona was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and Senior Friends both of Dodge City. She is survived by three sons; a daughter; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Floyd, Everett and Delmer; husband Harold; and an infant son.
