Home Journal Newspaper - Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas. Jan. 25, 1866 - Thursday County Line Meeting - A Public meeting held at Lathrop Hall in Ottawa on Saturday evening, 20 Jan. Hon. James HANWAY was elected Chairman and Harlen P. WELSH Esq., elected secretary. It was resolved that they were opposed to any change being made in the County of Franklin. Also resolved to secure increase of mail service between Lawrence and Humboldt daily instead of the tri weekly service. Resolved to petition for a mail route between Topeka and Mound City via Minneola, Ottawa and Lane. D.M. VALENTINE, Chairman. Earnest WA-TEE-CHE, a Quapaw Indian suffered the penalty of death by hanging on 19 Jan 1866 at Lawrence. The crime was murder of a white man, Mr. William HASTING, in Franklin County several months ago. After conviction, he wrote to the County Clerk, W.F. SHELDON, thanking him for his attentions while in confinement here and spoke kindly of Sheriff ROBBINS. Organization of the Franklin County Agricultural Society was held 17 Jan 1866. The following were elected: James HANWAY, President; John WALRUFF, Secretary; a committee of three, C.C. HUTCHINSON, P.P. ELDER and C.S. CLARK to report a list of officers; Asa HARRIS, Vice President; J.H. WHETSTONE, Treasurer; William TULLOSS, Joshua BAKER, W.E. KIBBEL, William O. PICKRELL and Isaiah PYLE as Directors. Died: Bailey HOBSON, formally from Indiana, died at his residence in Ottawa Twp. Saturday, 19 Jan 1866, after a long illness. His remains were buried in Hope Cemetery by members of Franklin Lodge no. 18, F&AM Masonic Solemnities. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father.
