Preaching by the Rev. Mr. MARQUIS of Franklin and Douglas Co. and Rev. Elias KENNEDY of Ottawa. Mr. R.W. BARNEY Esq. is in the real estate line. Major BOWLES has returned and comes this time as a man ought to, with his wife and children. We are pleased to notice that Dr. PARAMORE's family has arrived. Mr. KALLOCH has bought the farm of Joseph KING, located near Ottawa, price of $3,000. Mr. DOBSON has formed a co-partnership with M.J. STIMSON Esq. in the Hardware business. SCHRADE's shoe store on Main St. is nearly completed. We are glad to see that our friend Mr. McLAUGHLIN has converted his shanty into a very neat and tasty house. The Indians that are coming in here are either bringing liquor with them or getting it here and are occasionally getting drunk on it! If we don't see trouble from this, we are mistaken. Billy PICKRELL and party have arrived. They have been absent for 3 months in the Southern country. ================================================================== May 10, 1866 - Thursday Peter BAYSINGER was enticed away from Ottawa where he happened to be at the time, by the pretense that a man wanted to buy his farm. He was found dead, hanging from a tree in the neighborhood of DeSoto. The account of the matter is so conflicting that we are unable to state the facts in an intelligent manner. The Indians are selling land rapidly. The general desire among our citizens is that none of them should sell until they are given perfect title. The Ottawas have a magnified idea of the value of what they have to sell. We have urged these Indians to keep and cultivate their lands. MARR and POLLENGENER have opened a new Meat Shop. ================================================================= May 17, 1866 - Thursday Order of Attachment: Adam DOBSON Plaintiff vs. J.T. HICKS. For each violation heavy fines are imposed. We are glad of it and hope it may be enforced here. Deputy Sheriff C.L. ROBBINS on Tuesday made a visit on various parties who have been engaged in the sale of liquors in our town and arrested the following: Fred PINGER, Louis KALLAMORE and James SWITZER. Married: In New York City Tuesday, 15 May 1866, at 83rd Street Baptist Church, by Rev. H.K. STIMSON, the Rev. Frank RUSSELL of New York City married Miss Media STIMSON, of Ottawa, Franklin Co. Kansas, daughter of Rev. H.K. STIMSON. ========================================================================== = May 31, 1866 - Thursday We have had almost continuous showers for a week and the Marais des Cygnes has been very high. Passage by teams and our mail have been brought across in skiffs. We see the necessity of a bridge. Examination of the Murderers of Peter W. BAYSINGER. The examination took place at Olathe, Johnson County, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week. Counsel for the State was Mr. MILLER. The case was tried before Justices of the Peace S.B. MYRICK, E.P. NATEMAN and William MAXWELL. The names of the prisoners are Samuel GARRETT, John KENTON, Barnabas EVANS, Frank REYNOLDS, Mr. KAY, Col. Payne, R.E. RIVELY and Isaiah PARRISH. R.E. RIVELY and Isaiah PARRISH were discharged by the court. J.B. INGRAHAM and Daniel CARTER, two of the principal offenders escaped before arrest. The evidence shows that BAYSINGER was taken away from home by a party of men, one of whom claimed to be the sheriff of Johnson County, on the charge of being a horse thief. They took him to Monticello and kept him all day Sunday in the woods. The evidence shows further that BAYSINGER was most cruelly and shamefully treated and the men hung him to cover up their brutality and prevent him from taking redress upon them. The witnesses testified that the body was badly bruised by what were evidently heavy blows from a revolver. There was a great deal of excitement manifested at the trial and threats were made of rescuing the prisoners on the part of their friends. Prompt action of the Sheriff and his posse prevented any attempt of this kind. No bail was given and the prisoners were committed to jail. ========================================================================== =
