Early Pioneer Lady Laid to Rest Saturday--Came to Harper County in 1884. The passing of Mrs. J.N. BAKER last Friday, July 12th, at her home on West Main street, marks the passing of another pioneer Harper lady, one whose stands out as an example to those who would follow the right way of living and strive for the higher things of life. Mrs. Baker was always a leader in the betterment of her city and community, took an active part in church and civic affairs and was always ready when called upon to administer to those who were in the need of her services. Although she had been ill for a number of weeks she remained of a cheerful disposition and was ready to meet her Maker when the time came for her to be called. Harriet Edyth TILLMAN, daughter of Jacob and Maria Tillman was born at Elmira, N.Y., February 28, 1854, and died at Harper, Kansas, Friday, July 12th; age 75 years, four months and 14 days. She was united in marriage to Jasper Newton Baker, at the home of her parents in Carrol County, Mo., January 1, 1877. To this union was born seven daughters, and three sons, two daughters preceding her in death. They were: Nellie, age 2 years and Flora, age 25 years. Mr. and Mrs. Baker came to Harper, Kansas in the year of 1884 and settled on a farm five miles west of Harper, which place is still owned by the Baker family. She was united in the U.B. church in Missouri in 1874 and then united with the M.E. church at the Nebo school house in 1884. She later transferred her membership to Harper. She is survived by her husband, J.N. Baker, of Harper; Ella HASKINS, of St. Louis, Mo.; George H. Baker and Frank R. Baker of Catesby, Okla.; Mrs. Della CASE, Wichita; Mrs. Mabel BARBER, Harper; Mrs. Hattie MANINGER, Gage, Okla.; Dyarl R. Baker, Harper and Miss Ruth Baker, at home. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Harper on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. VonSchriltz, assisted by Rev. A.L. Hughes.
