BRAND, one of the best known men and merchants in Laporte county, died at his home in Kingsbury Tuesday forenoon, the result of a complication of diseases. Mr. Brand was born in Chautauqua county, New York, September 22, 1837, consequently was 62 years old last fall. His parents were Morrill and Sarah Brand. Lorenzo was raised in Silver Creek in the county of his birth, leaving there in 1855, at the age of 18, and first locating in Kingsbury, this county. He began life with scanty means and limited opportunities for an education. The public schools in his early home were the only source from which he obtained his education and they were of an inferior grade. After remaining a year in Kingsbury, he went to Valparaiso, thence to Denver, Colo., shortly afterwards. After visiting other points he returned to Kingsbury in 1862 and purchased a steam threshing machine which he operated until 1870, when he opened a dry goods store in Kingsbury. December 23, 1863, Mr. Brand was united in marriage to Miss Mary CATLIN whose father, John Catlin, was brother of the well known Catlin brothers of Stillwell of nearly sixty years ago, Joseph, Sprague and Meade. John Catlin never came west. There were born to this union six children, Carl D., Grace, Percy, Claude, Maude, and Olie. In 1886 Mr. Brand moved to Anthony, Kansas where he remained for some ten years, during which time he was engaged in the dry goods business. He returned to Kingsbury about two years ago and re-entered the dry goods business there, which he continued until death. By strict integrity, business sagacity and hard work, Mr. Brand accumulated considerable property and leaves his family in comfortable circumstances. Although he had met disaster and other impediments in his business life, his store room and goods being destroyed by fire over a year ago, with a brave heart and an honest purpose he proceeded to repair his injured fortune, which he had largely accomplished.--Laporte, (Ind.,) Republican. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/harper/obits/b/brand997gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
