Ed. Davis, Liveryman, Assaulted While Conveying two Indians out to the Reservation. Guilty Is Not Known. Perpetrators Slip up Behind Him in the Dark and Shoot in the Back--Result Unknown. Eli Isaacs Shot and Held Up. Suffers From a Wounded Limb---Amputation Deemed Necessary. A cruel assault took place about 9 o'clock last night, when Ed DAVIS, liveryman, of Mayetta, was shot by unknown parties, who slipped up behind him in the dark and shot him in the back. Davis was conveying a couple of Indians that had arrived on the evening train to the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation. The assault occurred about a mile or more from town. After committing the deed, the perpetrators made their escape. Davis was immediately conveyed to town and medical aid summoned, but the physicians were unable to determine the extent of his injuries. Further examination is being made today (Wednesday), but the result is unknown at the hour of going to press. At noon Davis was reported still unconscious and in a very critical condition. It is hardly possible that he can recover. No motive is assigned for the foul deed, as it is thought he was as free from enemies as the majority of men in a public business. Eli ISAACS was brought in from out on the Reservation about 10 o'clock last night. He said that unknown parties had not only stopped him, but had held him up. He was examined by town physicians. It was found a bullet had lodged in one of his legs. The physicians are still undecided as to whether an amputation of limb will be necessary. This case is also shrouded in mystery. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/jackson/newspapers/twocruel164nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ksfiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
