Martha Jane ALLEN was born in Orange County, North Carolina, about October 15, 1842. Departed this life October 6, 1922 in San Bernardino, California, aged 80 years. In the year 1861 she was united in marriage to Mr. Silas SCOTT and they lived most happily together until July 25, 1865, at Little Rock, Arkansas, when her husband passed away. Shortly afterwards she came to Kansas. She remained a widow for 14 years. On September 18, 1879, she was again united in marriage to Mr. Jerry ALLEN, and they lived a happy life together for 25 years until he was called in death, October 29, 1904. She lived in Kansas over 40 years. Being left alone and aged, in 1913, she came to San Bernardino, California, to reside with her sister and family and has been there since until the time of her death. Her sister preceded her in death on January 2 of this year. The two sisters have been near each other ever since they were separated from their mother, at the aged of four and six years. She professed faith in Christ many years ago and lived to all the light she had. About 25 years ago the Lord revealed to her by his word how to be saved and sanctified and to live a life free from sin, which she gladly accepted and walked therein. She was a true Christian and desired her life to be spent in the Lord's service; fulfilling the words of the Savior--"She hath done what she could." She trusted the Lord for her body, and many times was healed by his power. She bore her last affliction patiently, realizing that the end was near. She said she was ready to go, just waiting on the Lord. Funeral services were held at the funeral home of Stephens and Son at 2 p.m. Monday. Sister Dent had charge of the services and was assisted by Sister Emily Turner of Los Angeles, and Bro. J.W. Youngblood of Pomona. The services wer very impressive and largely attended by many friends and the floral offerings were most beautiful, which dimly spoke of the high esteem which she held with the many friends she made since coming to California. Her body was laid to rest beside her sister in the City cemetery. She leaves three nieces, Mrs. Martha SHAW, Miss Zelma Shaw, and Miss Emma HOLDEN, and one nephew, Terrus T. Holden, all of San Bernardino, California, who kindly cared for her during her illness. There are also other relatives in Oklahoma and Nebraska. She heretofore desired her body to be sent back to Kansas and buried in the Holton cemetery, but some time ago, since the passing away of her sister, in San Bernardino, her last request was to be laid beside her. Silently, Silently, She is laid to rest, Free from care, over there, Dwelling with the blest. Thou shalt bear no more life's burdens, Sickness, sorrow, death nor pain, In that Spirit lad thou are waiting, Where with Christ thy soul shall reign.
