Matthew BRAUM was born in Holland, Oct. 15, 1839, and came to America with an uncle and aunt when eight years of age. They settled near Southfield, Michigan, where he grew to manhood and married Nellie E. CORBETT, March 6, 1861. To this union five children were born, one son Robert and a daughter, Mrs. Nettie ROBB, having passed away, leaving three sons, John H., Creswell C. and McLeod, who were all present at his last brief illness. In 1867 he moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, and four years later came with his family to Jackson county, settling near Denison as one of the pioneers of the community. In December, 1874, his wife was taken away after a brief illness. Later he married Miss Alice WRIGHT who departed this life October 17, 1913. Out of their helpful kindness they took into their home two little children, one of whom survives and is now Mrs. Minnie WARD of Holton. She received and gave to them all of a daughter's love and affection. Later he married Mrs. Josephine BAINERD of Belle Plain, Iowa, who cheered the last years of his life with her kind care and faithful companionship. In early manhood he joined the Reformed Presbyterian church, serving many years as a deacon, and remained an active member until his death, which came peacefully Oct. 22, 1922, at the age of 83 years and 7 days. His genial ways and ready kindness won the respect and love of all who knew him. He was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need and to give wise counsel to those who asked. He lived close to God and found his greatest pleasure in thinking and talking of his religion which he commended to all by his consistent life. He will be sadly missed by his wife, his sons and daughter, his fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed in the church from which he was never absent in health, and by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. A favorite verse of his was: For whom have I in heaven but thee? None else on earth I long to know, My flesh may faint and weary be, My heart may fail and heavy grow, With strength, doth God my heart restore, He is my portion evermore. Funeral services were conducted at the R.P. church Wednesday at 2 p.m. by the pastor, Rev. W.O. Ferguson, assisted by Dr. D.H. ELLIOTT, of Topeka, a former pastor and friend. Pallbearers were Mr. Thomas WARD, Ray KNOWLES, James ROBB, Dan BRAUM, Hugh BRAUM, and Robert BRAUM. Remains were laid to rest in the R.P. cemetery. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/jackson/obits/b/braum972gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
