INTEMPERANCE THE SUPPOSED CAUSE. On Sunday afternoon, last, the people of West Muddy were at once surprised and sorrowed to hear of the sudden death of Wm. Cunningham, who had suicided a few hours previous by poison. A few days prior to his death, he had been on business to Topeka, and, as was often the case with him, partook of liquor, but this time more freely than usual, which led to a prolonged spree, and his untimely ending. Everything indicates that the suicide was premeditated; for on Sunday morning he arose, ate his breakfast, washed, and donned a clean attire, and after the folks had gone to church, retired to his room to make ready for a voyage over the valley of death. After having procured a glass of water, he swallowed the poison, drank of the water and placed the empty glass and vial upon a chair beside his bed, and then, as everything would go to show, died in terrible agony. Mr. Cunningham was 50 years of age, an old citizen of Jackson county, and a man who was universally respected by all who knew him; a large circle of friends and acquaintances sadly deplore his death, and especially the cause, and the taking of his life by his own hands.
