He was driving on the power of a threshing machine and in putting on the brake his foot slipped into the cogs, mashing it severely. Drs. Johnson and Murray, of St. Clere, and Dr. Scott, of Holton were called. It was found necessary to amputate the foot." A September 6, 1890, Independent Tribune, Holton, KS states: "A feeling of sadness and pity settled over our little neighborhood last Thursday over the report of Mr. Song's fatal accident. While he was threshing at Mr. Messamore's he attempted to step from the power when his foot was caught between the master-wheel and a pinion. Before assistance came he had applied the brake and stopped the horses-but not until his foot was cut in pieces by the cruel cogs. Drs. Scott and Murray were called and the foot was amputated. He did apparently well until Sunday when gangrene set in and caused his death Monday morning. Mr. Songs was born in the state of Ohio, March 10, 1834-in 1860 he came to Missouri, and married Miss Polly Chaney. In 1873 he came to Kansas, and united with the Baptist church in 1876. He was an agreeable, accommodating and well-meaning citizen and a good neighbor. He leaves a widow, two sons and three daughters to mourn his loss, who have the sympathy of the entire community."
