Zellers. Grant L. ZELLERS was born in Labanon, Pa., January 21, 1865, and passed from this life September 22, 1922, aged 57 years, 8 months and one day. He lived with his parents in Pennsylvania until he was 7 years of age when they moved to Elkhart, Indiana. At the age of 17 he came to Winston, Missouri, where his mother resided until the time of her death a few months ago. Upon coming to Winston, Mr. Zellers took up the study of telegraphy and was in the employment of the Rock Island Railway company for a number of years. He worked for the Burlington lines for a few years and then took up work on the Santa Fe as a chief dispatcher working in Kansas and Colorado. August 9, 1912, he applied for a position as train dispatcher on the Rock Island and was granted a position at Goodland on the Denver division. This position he held until the time of his death. He was a loyal patriot of the Rock Island. He knew the railroad form one terminal to another. Trained in the great school of discipline and efficient service he was systematic even to the smallest details of life. He was an able promoter of harmony and cooperation, was loyal to his superior officers and exacting but kindhearted to those who were under his direction. His highest thought was for the safety of the many lives who passed under this care and protection. His fine brotherly spirit made him a great friend, loved and admired by the men of every brotherhood and craft. He was united in marriage to Miss Clara JACKSON of Carrolton, Missouri, Nov. 14, 1888, who, after spending many years by his side in the journey of life, passed away at Goodland, Kan., September 12, 1913. Brothers Zellers was a Christian worker from this youth up. His greatest joy was in thinking and doing for others. For many years he worked with the Presbyterian church, and upon coming to Goodland he united with the M.E. church where for years he was a superintendent of the Sunday school and has faithfully served the church in almost every official capacity. He was the president of the Goodland Methodist Hospital Board and labored with joy in the thought that he was helping to establish an immortal institution that would go on doing good forever. On October 19, 1921, at Holton, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Miss Helen BROWN. They were very happily located in a beautiful modern home in Goodland, Kansas, and to this happy union twin sons were born. They were less than a month old when they were left fatherless by the sudden death of their father. May the Heavenly Father watch over the mother and her little ones, and may two fine young men go forth some day to the deeds of a noble man. Mr. Zellers was one of the most highly respected men of our church and community, and he will be missed by all. He will be missed by his pastor for he was like a brother, and always ready to help put the great programs of the Kingdom across. He will be missed by the sick and shut-ins where his calls have brought comfort and cheer. He will be missed by the railroad men who love and respect his memory. He will be missed by the church folk on Sunday morning as they gather to worship. He will be missed by his companion and two sons as they cling together and journey on in loneliness. He will be missed by brothers, sisters and friends who have appreciated his love and fellowship. He always plucked a thistel and planted a flower, wherever he thought a flower would grow. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and two sons; one brother, John Zellers of New York City; three sisters, Mrs. Calra DEAN of Elkhart, Indiana; Mrs. Hattie BISHOP of Cassopolis, Mich., and Mrs. Cora WEYRICK of East Akron, Ohio; one step-brother, R. J.. KEMBERLING, of Winston, Mo.; one half-brother, Ralph KEMBERLING, of Three Forks, Mont.; other relatives and many friends. Services were conducted at the Goodland M.E. church by his pastor M.R. Starbuck and the body was taken to Holton, Kan., for interment. M.R. Starbuck. ==== KS-FOOTSTEPS Mailing List ==== File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ks/jackson/obits/z/zellers642gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ksfiles/ File size: 4.6 Kb
