The Oskaloosa Independent Jefferson County Saturday March 13, 1880 March 13, 1880


A short time since, as two young ladies were driving across the bridge on the
Winchester road near the saw mill, some one blew the whistle at the mill,
frightening the horse, which almost sprang from the bridge, whirled and ran,
overturning the buggy and throwing both occupants on the ground. The horse tore
loose from the vehicle, after dragging it a short distance, and ran, when some
of the harness getting entangled in some bushes, she stopped. With the
assistance of the miller the ladies patched up the broken harness and continued
their journey. When the person or persons saw that the horse was alarmed they
blew the whistle louder. We have heard numerous complaints of this, and a stop
should be be put to it at once, or it may get some one into serious trouble.
