The Oskaloosa Independent, Jefferson County, Saturday, May 17, 1879 May 17, 1879
A wretched looking outfit, consisting of a poor team and shackly wagon, with a
dirty woman, four dirty children and a crazy old man, made its appearance on our
streets yesterday, direct from "Rackensack." The woman bestirred herself at
once, but her glib demand for charity meeting with slow response, she threatened
to leave her insane father "on the town"--a game of bull dozing probably played
on every community she enters.
