It is always a contemptible business in which any honorable man or woman ought to be ashamed; but it becomes a crime when it assails the reputation of others. Nothing is more disgusting to a right thinking person of either sex, than to see a number of men, great or small, congregate on the streets or in stores, making remarks about absent persons male or female, and often bandyng epithets unfit to be spoken under an circumstances. Any person who has either sense or manhood about him ought to be above such low business and ashamed to be caught among those who get down to such a debasing level. And it is but little better for old or young ladies over their tea or in their social intercourse, to indulge in the scandles which may be set afloat by vulgar and reckless persons. Society is cursed by its gossipers from one year's end to the other.
