 Miss ARNOLD sued G.W. GRAYSON for her wages, and the trial came off before
Esquire Stanley Wednesday. The jury disagreed. The case is one of a young girl
suing for wages. There appears to be no material disagreement about the time or
amount of work done. It is in evidence that the girl milked ten cows twice a
day. No man or woman can be found who would undertake the work alone for less
than two cents per cow each milking, and no reasonable person would think of
asking another to do it for less, for it is hard work. At that low price the ten
cows would amount to 20 cents a milking, 40 cents a day, $2.80 a week. The girl
washed for the family once or twice a week; 50 cents washing, we all know is the
very least that anybody can get a family washing done for; and this lowest price
added to the other makes $3.30 a week, and all the house-work for seven days not
counted! That jury certainly did not do any figuring; they were doubtless honest
men who wished to do right, but must h!
 ave become confused some how. There is an old Book which denounces heave woe
upon those who "oppress the hireling in his wages," and this applies to courts
and juries as well as employers. In this case it is evidence that while her
employer was sick the girl took care of stock and did other work not expected of
her sex, and if done by a man would have cost several dollars a week. No jury
ought to think of giving that girl less than three dollars a week.
