Arrest Arthur Carder On Six Counts. The Still Is Concealed In Brush Patch Hundred Yards from Farm House, All Ready to Operate. Arthur CARDER, 23, young farmer, northeast of Perry, is charged with six counts of violation of the liquor law, and his case will come up in district court in November, since officers discovered a large still close to his home. Carder is now out on $1,500 bond, signed by his father, John Carder of Oskaloosa. Sheriff Conrad H. AULL has been working for several months on information that a still was operating in that vicinity, and his investigation culminated in a search last Thursday afternoon, in which he was accompanied by Deputy Lew THOMPSON and County Attorney, Jas. F. SWOYER. With a search warrant the officers went to the Carder farm, and found that Arthur Carder was working in a nearby field. They questioned his housekeeper, who knew nothing of a still in the neighborhood. After searching the house, th esheriff found a well-defined trail leading north from the house, and the officers followed the path about seventy-five to a hundred yards into a thick patch of brush, not over a hundred and fifty yards from the road. Their search ended when they found a 20-gallon still, with a barrel of mash, all ready to operate. Burner, tank and coils were attached. The still had a capacity of about a gallon of liquor an hour, the officers state. The plant was across the Carder fence line on the Dick farm, in a tract which had been sub-rented by Carder, according to the sheriff. As soon as they discovered the still, Carder was arrested and brought to Oskaloosa. His case was filed in district court and bond set.
