RAINES, Ozawkie, April 22, 1922, age 89 years, 22 days. He came to the United States from Sterling, Canada, when eight years old. After he grew to manhood, he taught school and served his apprenticeship of carriage maker. In 1858 he came to Kansas and settled in Morris county, where he homesteaded a quarter section of land. In 1860 he went to Colorado, and in the fall that year went to Texas, where he was drafted into the Confederate army. After washing in oak bark and passing as a Mexican, he deserted the Rebel army, going into Old Mexico, where he joined the Union army, serving until June 7, 1865, when he was mustered out of service at Mobile, Alabama. In 1866 he came to Kansas and settled on a farm, batching from 1866 to December 7, 1872, when he married Mrs. Ellen JOHNSON, living on the farm until 1909, then moved to Perry, where Mrs. BETTYS died April 2, 1917, and since that time he has made his home wit! h his children, most of the time with Mrs. W.R.
