Cain Dies Suddenly. Perry community and Jefferson county suffered an irreparable loss Monday, March 1, when W.E. CAIN, 75, a former publisher of the Perry Mirror, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul GALBRAITH, in Perry. "W.E." as he was affectinately known in many communties in both Kansas and Missouri, died of a heart attack after many years of suffering from a heart ailment that at time confined him to his bed, but at other times allowed him to be active in almost every phase of community life. It was on May 28, 1878, that Mr. CAIN was born in Paris, ill. On June 19, 1901, he was untied in marriage to Sadie O. BOYER at her home near Carrolton, Mo. Mrs. CAIN died July 1, 1953, just eight months to the day before the death of Mr. CAIN. He was an indefatigable worker for community betterment, a fact which endured him to all who knew him. The organizations in which he was active include the Perry Methodist Church, Lion Club, Ramona Chapter of Eastern Star, of which both he and his wife were charter members, a charter member of Perry Masonic Lodge, Lawrence Consistory of Scottish Rite, and was secretary of the Modern Woodmen. A lifelong Methodist, Mr. CAIN served in Perry church as a faithful worker and regular attendant. For many years he was Sunday School superintendent, sang each Sunday in the choir, served on the official board in nearly every capacity. He was president of the Board of Trustees at the time of his death. Next to his church, the Masonic Lodge was nearest to Mr. CAIN's heart. It was just after the turn of the century, March ??, 1904, that he was initiated as an Entered Apprentice in Deepwater, Mo. On May 6, 1904, he was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason. Had Mr. CAIN lived until May 6 of this year, he would have been awareded his 50 years pin at an appropriate service in his honor in Perry Lodge. Work toward that special service had already begun by brother Masons. Although Mr. CAIN believed in the goodness of God and was ready to meet death as any true Christian ever can be, the one regret of his life, if there were any regrets, was that he did not live to receive the 50-year award. Shortly after becoming a Master Mason, "W.E." was elected secretary of the lodge in Deepwater, Mo., a position he held until moving to Colorado in 1906. In 1909, Mr. CAIN, with two other Master Masons, organized a lodge at Cheyenne Wells, Colo. After serving as Senior Warden in 1909 and 1910, Mr. CAIN was elected Master of the Lodge and served as Master in 1911 and 1912. In September 1913, he moved to Perry. SInce there was no Masonic Lodge here, he immediately set about organizing one. The dispensation for the Ladge was granted on November 10, 1916. Mr. CAIN was Master of Perry Lodge while under dispensation, in 1916, and was Master in 1917. On December 21, 1917, he was elected secretary of Perry Lodge and was still serving as secretary at the time of his death. To have been elected 37 times as secretary speaks well of the esteem in which he was held by his brother Masons. It was because of purchase of the Perry Mirror that Mr. CAIN moved to Perry in 1913. He was editor and publisher of the Mirror until 1924. After selling the Mirror, Mr. CAIN was in the insurance business in Perry until less than a year ago. He sold his insurance business to Roy CAMERON. Mr. CAIN is survived by three daughters; Mrs. O.B. GLOVER, Manhattan; Mrs. Paul GALBRAITH, Perry; and Mrs. Harold E. RELFIELD, Salina; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one nephew and many friends. Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m., from the Perry Methodist Church with Rev. Harold WOLF in charge. Burial will be in Topeka Cemetery. The body will lie in state at his home from Wednesday night until Thursday noon. =================================================== Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Archive Project (http://www.usgenweb.org) and by the KSGenWeb USGenWeb Archive Project USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
