The evening before, Mr. Hammond attempted to shoot a hawk with his gun, but it only snapped and would not go off. Sunday morning the hawk made it appearance again, and as a number of the family were going out to the cow yard to milk, they heard him remark he was going to try his gun again on that hawk. Shortly after this a report of a cap was heard, and a second or so afterwards, the report of a gun. It is supposed that Mr. Hammond attempted to shoot his gun off, but that the load hung fire, and in bringing it down to the ground it exploded, the ball striking Mr. Hammond in the right temple, and lodging in his brain, causing immediate death. The sad accident has cast a gloom over the neighborhood where it happened. Mr. Hammond was a young man well thought of and it was only on Sunday two weeks before that the was married to Miss Phoebe ! GLEMM(?). Valley Falls.
