Reynolds. Samuel D. REYNOLDS was born near Trenton, Murray Township, Northumberland County, Canada, July 13, 1823. He left there in 1833 with his father removing to Norwood, Peterboro County, Canada, which was then a wilderness heavily timbered. There were no schools, no churches, nor conveniences of any kind. In early life he learned the blacksmith trade. He was married to Mary KIRKPATRICK, Sept. 2, 1845, who died March 7, 1858. To this union were born seven children, five of whom are living: R.W. and H.M. Reynolds, and Mary E. BLAIR, of McLouth, Kansas, J.E. Reynolds, in Peterboro County, Canada, and Celia Reynolds of Lawrence, Ks. He moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, in Oct. 1863, to work on the construction of the Kansas Pacific Railway. In Jan. 1864 he enlisted in the 16th Kansas Cavalry, Company D, under Samuel B. Walker, Commander, late of Lawrence, in Douglas County, Kansas. He was in the service 1 year and 11 months during which time he was in several heavy engagements, namely: The battles of Independence, Big and Little Blue, Westport, and followed Price in his noted raids. He was also with Walker in his movement against the Sioux Indians in the Powder River Expedition in Wyoming and Montana, during which time they had to live on mule meat and parched corn. The cold at the time was intense and all the soldiers suffered very much before getting back to Ft. Leavenworth, where he was discharged in 1865. After his discharge he located in Springdale, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, with a capitol of $2.50. He was married the second time, to Esther E. WILSON, March 19th, 1867, who died April 11, 1879. To this union were born two children, Ada A. CURTIS, of Pittsburg, Ks., and Samuel C. Reynolds, of McLouth. He was engaged in blacksmithing, general store business and farming at Springdale, about 18 years. He moved to McLouth in 1884 whre he has since resided, being engaged in blacksmithing and general store business until his retirement about 13 years ago. He was received into the Methodist Church at Springdale in 1870.
