The Oskaloosa Independent, Jefferson County, Saturday, July 13, 1878
Died.--At Oskaloosa, Kan., July 6, 1878, Hortense TILLOTSON, aged 16 years, 1
month and 5 days.
Her graces of mind and character were known to all who knew her well--to her own
family and intimate friends most of all. While naturally of a retired
disposition, not given to external manifestations, she had strong feelings and
intense intellectuallity, together with aspirations for the highest perfection
in true womanhood. Her progress toward the goal of her ambition was already far
beyond her years. To her intimate friends the realization of her sudden loss
from the social circle she adorned so well came with a crushing force--to her
mother and brothers it blotted out the sunlight of their lives and left them
only the sweet but better memory of a devoted daughter and sister upon whose
companionship they had builded much of their hopes of happiness and enjoyment in
this world. It is well for them to bear in mind that the "flood of years" will
assuage the bitterness of the remembrance while the beauty and brightness of the
picture will be left untarnished.
