He was married to Mary Ann STEEL, Sept. 19th, 1844, at Eddyville, Iowa. To them were born 13 children, 9 of whom with their mother survive him. There are also 55 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild now living. His wife with three of his children were all that could attend. He enlisted in company F., Eighteenth Regiment, Iowa Volunteers, July 17th, 1862 and was honorably discharged Feb. 12, 1863. He re-enlisted in Company B, Eighth Regiment, Iowa Calvary, June 20, 1863, and served until the close of the war and was honorably discharged May 31, 1865. During his last term of service he was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville and Florence prisons for 7 months as a prisoner of war. He moved to Jefferson county, Kansas, NOv. 6th, 1865 and has resided in the vicinity of McLouth.
