Wilbur E. Showalter b. 12-30-1916 Kingman co KS d. 9-19-2005 Dayton OH Montgomery co Arlington Nat'l Cemetery Arlington VA Arlington co S/O William A. and Esty Settle Showalter. He was a graduate of U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., in 1939, the Artillery School, Command and General Staff College and National War College. He was a commanding officer, 703rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, 3rd Armored Division, VII Corps, First Army, at Normandy-Elbe River. He received the Bronze Star, Belgian Croix de Guerre, Belgian Fourragere and Chilean Al Merito Militar, Al Merito. He attended Artillery School, Command and General Staff College and Armed Forces Staff College. He declined promotion to Brigadier General in 1964. He was a professor of Military Science at the University of Dayton from 1963 to 1965. He retired from the army in 1965. He held staff positions at U.D. from 1965 to 1979, including Financial Aid, Federal Programs and Assistant to President. Wilbur, along with his wife, established the Showalter Scholarship for special students at the University of Dayton. He also volunteered at Sycamore Hospital. In June 1939, he married Lucille Hanford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille; a son, Edward "Ned" Showalter; his parents; and two sisters, Alma Showalter and Alberta Showalter Pointer.
