V. SHIPLEY DIES OF HEART FAILURE AT HIS HOME IN COUNTY       D. V. Shipley, a resident of Oswego for forty, died Monday, February 11, 1909, at his residence. The cause of his death is attributed to heart failure. Although in declining health for several weeks, he most courageously fought the grim messenger, and hoped to ultimately win. He was able to rise in the morning and eat breakfast, and a half hour before he died, walked to his bedroom to lie down and rest. He fell into the sleep that knows no waking. Peacefully he passed away, not the slightest movement of the muscles indicated that he had answered the summons. When he failed to respond to the greeting of his wife, the change was observed.       And an, another earnest, active old settler has passed away. Another toiling life is ended. Forty years residence in this city proved that Mr Shipley possessed rare qualities of mind and heart. The memory of his many kind acts will live on and remain bright and beautiful in the hearts of those who knew him. He has left a family and friends a heritage better than riches - a good name.               ~~~~~~~             PICTURE               ~~~~~~       Trained to the life of a soldier and taking interest in military affairs, he was essentially a man of peace. He demonstrated that he filled in this city. In all his work, he took an optimistic view and never faltered. He enlisted in Co B, 11th Indiana Volunteers under the command of Gen Lew Wallace, in the civil war, and after serving with distinction, was discharged on account of a disability. This was one of his disappointments. The spirit of Patriotism dominated him in later years.       He was born in Hendricks county, Indiana, and was aged 73 years, 11 months and 16 days.   Funeral services were held at the family residence Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev L S Jones. A large number of friends attended from town and country. A profusion of carnations, roses and lillies were presented by A O U W lodge of which the deceased was a charter member, and other friends. The casket was borne by the oldest settlers in Oswego, J F Waskey, Alex McCully, M M Kingsbury, Thos McNeff, E T Read and Scoot Taylor. The singing was led by Miss Margaret Carpenter and made impressive by such songs as "Gathering Home" and "Some Sweet Day, Bye and Bye". Rev Fulcher offered prayer. Escorted by members of A O U W, the procession formed to Oswego cemetery.       Bereft of a companion with whom she lived for forty four years, much sympathy is expressed for Mrs Shipley, in her loneliness. They have one son, Conductor M C Shipley of Monett, Mo.
