In his youth he moved with his parents to the State of Ohio, and a few years later to the State of Illinois. At the age of about twenty years be came to Chetopa, Kansas and engaged in the stage and livery business. About two years later he took a claim of one hundred and sixty acres about five miles southwest of Chetopa, where he lived until 1899, at which time he moved to the home place in the northern part of this city. When Mr. Davis first arrived in Chetopa he was without money but had an ample supply of health and energy. In a few years, and in spite of grasshopper and poor crops, he was able to pay the indebtedness against his farm and improve it so that it was a most comfortable home. It has never had a mortgage or lien of any kind against it from that day to this. On the 25th day of March, 1872, Mr. Davis married Miss Louella Keeler, eighteen year old girl from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, who shared with him all the trials, privations and hardships and there were many of pioneer days and who alone nursed him through several spells of sickness and up to the very moment he passed into the unknown on September 3rd, 1918. Besides the widow, he leaves four children: viz: Mrs. Beatrice Hare of Oroville, Washington, Harry G. Davis, of Muskogee, Okla., Mrs. Mamie Bush of Yakima, Washington and Mrs. Leta Berg of Spokane, Washington. All of said children were born on the old farm and received their early education in the country at what is now known as the Cook school. He also leaves seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Davis endeavored to follow, as his life time friends and neighbors will verify, three mottos: First: "Honesty is the best policy." Second: "Owe no man and you will always have friends." Third. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Additional Comments: DEATH NOTICE.
